One in nine women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer some time in their lives. All women are at risk for developing the disease. Over 80 percent of women who develop breast cancer do not have significant risk factors other than being a woman and growing older.
At Ottawa Regional Medical Center, we want to help you be informed and proactive. We encourage you to follow a comprehensive program focusing on the best weapon against breast cancer…early detection.
Early detection means having a breast care routine including:
- Monthly breast self-exam
- Yearly physical exam performed by your physician
- Mammography at appropriate intervals

Our mammography services are fully accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Food and Drug Administration. This accreditation is awarded only to those facilities that offer low-dose dedicated mammography equipment and adhere to strict quality standards. The ACR's standards ensure that only fully trained personnel perform and interpret mammograms.
In addition, our professionals assure that you and your physician receive results quickly in order to make informed decisions if further procedures are necessary.
American Cancer Society Breast Health Guidelines
For women with no symptoms:
- Begin monthly self-exams by age 20
Ask your physician for a physical breast exam:
- Every three years from age 20 to 39
- Every year beginning at age 40
Have routine mammography screenings:
- Begin by age 40
- Every year or two from age 40 - 49
- Every year beginning at age 50
